How words are counted
A word is any run of letters or numbers, including contractions (don’t) and hyphenated words (well-known), in any language that uses spaces. Sentences end with ., ! or ?. Paragraphs are separated by blank lines. Reading time assumes 238 words a minute (the average adult silent reading speed); speaking time assumes 140.
Common length targets
- SEO title: about 50–60 characters. Meta description: about 150–160.
- X (Twitter) post: 280 characters. SMS: 160 characters per segment.
- College application essay: often 500–650 words.

Frequently asked questions
Does it count words in other languages?
Yes for languages that separate words with spaces, such as French, Spanish and Hindi. Chinese and Japanese text is counted by characters instead.
Are spaces counted as characters?
Both are shown: the total including spaces, and the count without spaces.
